I'm doing my best

Food for thought

The Spanish education system  is once again in the news for the appalling results at the end of secondary education. A huge amount of kids drop out without a single qualification.

This stinks!

We are failing miserably to reach the students and the

"Fracaso escolar" grows by the day.

                                         BUT OF COURSE

It's not only the kids that are failing .

It's everything from the system, the family, the society and of course we the teachers who also share part of the blame without a doubt.

  • Kids from the age of three spend most of their day out the house often even more time than their parents.
  • Eating, breakfast, lunch and often tea at school.
  • Stressed overworked mums and dads trying to help with homework well into the evening. doesn't help the situation especially if they don't speak English and their kid's in a bi-lingual school.
  • Not enough sleep.  Not enough play

  • Too much unsupervised internet, tuenti, facebook video games.

  • Teachers out of date as far as new technology goes and unable to motivate or reach out to students.
  • Teachers finding for the first time in history, student know a lot more than they do about new technology and feeling very insecure about it.
  • An incredibly high level of frustration among students and increasing difficulty to concentrate.  They are so  used to having information at the flick of a switch and they live in a fast moving world of  sounds and images.

How the heck , can we keep  their attention and motivate them with a blackboard and a piece of chalk.? (Yes in Spain we still use them)

We need to provide them with the tools they will need when they get out in the big bad world

  • Great communication skiills
  • A foreign language (Usually English)  that keeps me in a job!!!!!!!!
  • Motivation
  • The ability to move in the ever changing interactive world with all the new technolgy at their disposal
  • But most of all we want them to be happy, well balanced adults.

I swear to God I'm doing my best
