Halloween

Incy Wincy Spider

Incy Wincy Spider and

It's raining it's pouring.  The old man is snoring.  He went to bed and bumped his head and he couldn't get up in the morning.  Rain, rain go away, come again another day.

The rhyme is believed to have originated from Ireland during the commonwealth period (1649-1660) and the dictatorial conditions in the country at that time.

The poor weather conditions in line one reflect the genocide committed against Irish Catholics whilst the last three lines are most likely a wish that Oliver Cromwell, the Lord Protector of England, will die in his sleep.

Halloween crafts with Red Ted

Year five this week we're working on instruction texts so in the next few days I want you to have a look at this blog and choose one of the halloween crafts.  Then copy the intructions on to the planning  frame I gave you.

Choose something that you'd like to make.
You are going to need imperative verbs, that's why you had the homework today to start learning a few.

five year olds at play.

Theres nothing like learning a few insults in a foreign language to encourage production so
I'm the king of the caste and you're a dirty rascal was something we used to say to each other at school.  It's probably terrribly out of date but it sounds like English and they love it.

more puppets

Don't they look great??????

In a cottage five year olds

Here are some of the children in one of my five year old classes singing In a cottage in a wood.
They take it in turn to come out and sing the song.  So I can check if they are singing and doing the actions.  It's a bit difficult to tape and sing at the same time because I need to keep eye contact with them.  I might try to get some help to tape them the next time.

Sing a rainbow five year olds

This is Sing a rainbow with the Auslan sign language 5 year old Spanish children.
Again using gestures as you can see you keep them in controlled movement.
Using songs and stories in the infant or preschool classroom  (3-5 years) you are teaching chunks of language in context.  Always try to stay away from lists of vocabulary and the dreaded flashcards.

Ghost of Sam Mc Gee

Sam Mc Gee five year olds

The five year olds have learnt a new poem today, it's called:

I'm the ghost of Sam McGee

I'm the ghost of Sam Mc Gee.
I walk the strees from 10 till  3.
All the little children are afraid of me.
Cause I'm the ghost of Sam Mc Gee.

It was taught to me my grandad Tom  when I was about five myself.

Hey everyone,

If you want to edit your photos before you put them into your blog there is a great toy called photoshop express.  There are "Tutorias in youtube" and if I can do it than anyone can.  You don't have to download it just use it online.  It's magic.

Just look at the five year olds.

5º B Circle Game ( 5º de primaria)

This is the circle game that we use to practise vocabulary in year five.

You can use this idea to teach any new vocabulary in English or science it's better if the language is taught in a chunk and not isolated words.

Don't forget.   Go.  I've got...................who's got....................................????

So this is me!

I didn't get my hair done for my first public appearance as you can see.  But hopefully the video will be useful to you teachers out there.

But it takes ages to upload a video...

Is there a quicker way to do it I wonder?

It's always good to put your money where your mouth is, isn't it????

So next time you see this video it will be with my students.

Halloween videos

Some good Halloween videos for year five!

5º de primaria: Verb Tenses

Hey Year Five! Here is an example of the verb tenses we’ve been studying in Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
It's called the  present perfect continuous tense.

Do you remember what Daddy Bear said?

subject
auxiliary verb

auxiliary verb
main verb

+
I
have

been
eating
porridge
+
You
have

been
sitting
in my chair
-
It
has
not
been
raining
In the forest
-
We
have
not
been
looking
For Goldilocks
?
Have
you

been
sleeping
In my bed?
?
Have
they

been
walking
In the wood?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

An action continuing up to now:

We use the present perfect continuous tense to talk about an action that started in the past and is continuing now. This is often used with for or since.

I have been sleeping for 2 hours.
pastpresentfuture

Action started in past.Action is continuing now.
  • I have been sleeping for 2 hours. [I am still sleeping now.]
  • We've been walking in the woods since 9 o'clock. [We're still walking now.]
  • How long have you been eating  porridge ? [You are still eating porridge now.]
  • We have not been sitting in baby bears chair. [And we are not sitting now.]

Now it's time to try this quiz.

5º de primaria: Goldilocks puppets

Making Puppets
Hi everyone in year 5,

This is a good website from the British Council to have a look at to listen to the story of Goldilocks and do some activities.

http://learnenglishkids.britishcouncil.org/en/short-stories/goldilocks-and-the-three-bears

You can listen to the Song on Youtube.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UaulRHrJGeU

What do you think about making some puppets?

There will be a prize for the most original, so use your imagination!!!!
Then we can go and tell the story of Goldilocks to the children in pre-school.

Here are some ideas:

Cinco años: Polar bear video

Este es el cuento de Polar Bear Polar bear what do you hear?

Cinco años: Rainbow song with sign language

Hola otra vez!
Los niños se saben esta canción. Intentadlo con lenguaje de señas.
Try this song and learn the sign language

Be creative

Mums, dads, educators:
Here in Spain many years of rote learning has seriously hindered creative development.  I find it extraordinary that so many marvellous Spanish "creators" have managed to survive the system and still have any creativity left at all. Just think of Picasso, Dali and Míro not to mention the wonderful dancers and musicians like Sara Baras, Maria Serrano, Cortes, Placido Domingo, Jose Carreras and Andres Segovia
Instead of feeling proud of these amazing geniuses,  Spaniards are often heard moaning about "The foclóricos".

Many consider anything" Made in Spain" to be inferior (except the food).  Anything German is highly recognised or considered real quality.
When you just have to open your eyes and look around any Spanish classroom to see incredible artistic talent often going to waste.
This is so obvious in schools where artistic merit is not at all recognised.
Oh Yes I forgot,  only kids who are capable of memorising everything and then vomitting in back in a ridiculous exam that only tests the lower order thinking skills are "brainy".  The rest well...........
Parents are forced to spend hours slogging over enormously long sums and analysing texts with their kids for homework because that's what good parents do.
But sorry............................... Wouldn't it be more fun to make a model plane or invent a dance or a stupid song or make up a fantasy story where you and they are the hero of course?
Encourage free thinking and please don't give them all the answers; make them find the facts for themselves
If you think like me then at least we are two weirdos in the world.  At least in the classroom I can do something about it.

He was a pretty average student.

Teaching resources: How do we get them to listen?

How do we get them to listen?

I just started this year with my Spanish five year olds and I firmly believe that to help them learn English they need to laugh a lot, listen a lot, be curious and most of all be a little bit scared.

That might sound weird but according to leading experts fear, laughter and curiosity stimulate the brain and make it more receptive.

When I say fear I mean ..............what you talk about and the way you say it can keep kids listening.

The song “In a cottage in a wood” talks about the hunters and the danger for the rabbit.

Stop, listen and be quiet; a monster at the door is much more interesting than a dog for a small child.

Watch my video and you'll see what I mean.

Teaching resources: Las Sudacas

Today two five year olds in the playground in a Spanish primary school shocked me to the core.

"What are you doing?" I asked.

"Making poison out of acorns and colacao (chocolate milk) ", the two little angels replied.

"It's to kill the Sudacas" (South Americans) one added.

I stood rooted to the sand.

"But why do you want to kill them?"  I asked.

"Because they are bad", one cherub answered.

I called the music teacher over and repeated what I'd heard.

She asked them: “Chicos que hacéis?”

"Haciendo veneno", they said.

"Para quien?", she asked.

"Para matar las sudacas".

"Y quien son las sudacas?", she cleverly asked.  “And who are they?”

"Profe, ¿no sabes? Son unos pajarracos blancos y negros que matan a todos los pajaritos en el jardín; mi padre mató una". (Urracas or magpies).

“Don’t you know miss? They're those black and white birds that kill all the small birds in the garden..."

Cinco años: Polar Bear Polar Bear

¡Hola padres y madres de alumnos de 5 años A/B! Estas últimas semanas hemos estado trabajando sobre este cuento:

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5p6EYujwec&feature=related

Los niños han aprendido animales nuevos como walrus, peacock y boa constrictor.

Han aprendidido el chant adaptado:

Polar bear, polar bear what do you hear?  I hear a lion 1,2, 3.

Han aprendido a calcar los animales (developing fine motor skills) y han hecho un libro para llevar a casa.
Esta semana haremos un mural.
