Thanksgiving material

Treasure Hunt about Thanksgiving.

Post these cards around the wall of the classroom then give students the questions sheet and get them to go around the room and answer the questions in pairs.

Card 1
Thanksgiving is a very American holiday. It is also called Thanksgiving Day. It is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November every year. It used to be a religious holiday to give thanks to God.
Card 2
On December the 4th, 1619, a group of English pioneers arrived at a place called Berkeley Hundred, in Virginia. The group made a promise that the day of their arrival should be a "day of thanksgiving" to God.
Card 3  Some people believe that this holiday is to thank Native Americans for teaching the pilgrims how to catch eels and grow corn in Plymouth, Massachusetts.
Card 4  In 1941, President Roosevelt made Thanksgiving a federal holiday.
CARD 5 The main event of any Thanksgiving is the Thanksgiving dinner. It is traditional to have baked or roasted turkey. This is usually accompanied with mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, fall vegetables, cranberry sauce, and gravy.
Card 6 Pumpkin pie is the most commonly eaten dessert and Abraham Lincoln issued a 'Thanksgiving Proclamation' on third October 1863 and officially set aside the last Thursday of November as the national day for Thanksgiving.
Card 7 The Thanksgiving holiday weekend is one of the busiest times of the year for traveling. It is a four-day or five-day weekend vacation for most schools and colleges, and many businesses and government workers get three or four days off.
Card 8 Thanksgiving is also the unofficial signal for Christmas preparations to begin. Once Thanksgiving finishes, stores fill their shelves with Christmas goods. It is also a bad time to be a turkey.
 Card 9
 The Plymouth Pilgrims were the first to celebrate the Thanksgiving.
·  The Pilgrims sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to reach North America.
·  They sailed on the ship, which was known by the name of 'Mayflower'.

Card 10
  The Wampanoag Indians were the people who taught the Pilgrims how to cultivate the land.

 The Pilgrim leader, Governor William Bradford, had organized the first Thanksgiving feast in 1621. He invited the neighboring Wampanoag Indians to the feast.
The first Thanksgiving celebration lasted three days.


Card 12

·  In the US, about 280 million turkeys are sold for the Thanksgiving celebrations.
·  Each year, the average American eats somewhere around 8-10 kilos of turkey

·  Lobster, rabbit, chicken, fish, squashes, beans, chestnuts, hickory nuts, onions, leeks, dried fruits, maple syrup and honey, radishes, cabbage, carrots, eggs, and goat cheese are thought to have made up the first Thanksgiving feast.

·  Although, Thanksgiving is widely considered an American holiday, it is also celebrated on the second Monday in October in Canada.

 Circle Game for ThanksgivingCut up the strips of paper and give one to each student.  They must standup and read their card and the next student continues all around the class.  Time thenm with a stop watch.
